Martin Johnston Furniture

Lo Scoglio

In 2021, Nick from Skyline Construction reached out to Martin with a vision for opulent accommodations tailored to a global clientele and to create a home in Coopers shoot, Byron Bay. Embracing world-class materials, they crafted a luxury space, blending elegance and functionality. This collaboration epitomized their commitment to excellence, enticing discerning travellers seeking unparalleled comfort, sophistication and to be surrounded by Byron’s world class craftsmanship. Little did they both know, Nick and Martin were about to start a job of a lifetime.

This residential fit-out exudes a blend of luxury and craftsmanship, with each detail meticulously designed and handcrafted to perfection by Martin Johnston and his dedicated, two-man team. In this Tuscan-inspired residence, luxury meets sustainability as Martin utilizes the most premium materials throughout the build such as recycled European Oak, American Black Walnut, and Italian marble bench tops and hand painted finishes. The result is a timeless and sophisticated living space where craftsmanship and quality reign supreme.

Clients Charlie and Angelica utilized recycled Euro Oak from the late 1800s that they wanted to use on the face of the cabinetry whilst Martin suggested to use a rich, select grade American Black Walnut on the inside of the units for their project to create a juxtaposed effect. Martin custom-veneered over 80 sheets of Walnut plywood to meet their aesthetic and sustainability goals inside the cabinetry.

Without the presence of an available architect or interior designer, Martin had to work closely with the clients and builder to develop their original concepts and bring their vision to life. Martins experience in furniture design and drafting enabled the team to work at a fast pace. Whilst 2D images and 3D models were created for our clients benefit, Martin was also engaged to draw other tangible items such as the Brass sinks and breakfast bar to assist other trades such as tilers and brass fabricators. This meticulous planning ensured that every element of the cabinetry seamlessly integrated into the overall design scheme, resulting in a home that exuded both timeless elegance and contemporary functionality.

The clients expressed a deep appreciation for the eco-friendly ethos of using recycled Oak in their home's cabinetry. However, they also desired a diverse array of styles throughout their living space. To fulfill this vision, they entrusted Martin and his team to incorporate solid timber doors into various areas, such as the entertainment units, mudroom, and laundry. These doors were meticulously handcrafted adding a bespoke touch to each space.

Martin's craftsmanship extended to the wardrobes upstairs, where he embarked on the painstaking process of grain-matching all the rails, mullions, and stiles. Additionally, he personally crafted all the moldings, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious design throughout the home.

An homage to traditional woodworking techniques, nearly 50 solid timber drawers were finger joined, a method reminiscent of craftsmanship from bygone eras. This meticulous approach not only enhanced the longevity of the pieces but also paid tribute to the artisanal practices of yesteryears.
